The Department of Production Technology was the fifth department to be started in MIT by the  year 1977, offering  B.Tech. (Production Engineering) programme for B.Sc graduates. In 1978, MIT was amalgamated as one the campuses of unitary Anna University.  The start of the post graduate programme in Manufacturing Engineering by the year 1993 was a milestone to be recognised as a higher education offering department. The department is unique with its initiative of M.E.(Mechatronics) (Full time) in the year 1999, first of its kind in India, as an outcome of academic excellence in low cost automation.  The department started to offer B.E. (Production Technology) part time in the year 1999 for the working class people from industries and academics.  Yet another feat of the department was the start of  M.E. (Manufacturing Engg. with specialisation in Green Manufacturing) (Part-Time) in the year 2013 with an aim of educating environmental and resource effective manufacturing systems. The department was vested the responsibility of offering B.E. (Mechanical Engg.) full time programme since 2015.

From the academic year 2022-2023, a new UG programme in B.E. (Robotics and Automation) was introduced, in lieu of B.E.(Mechanical Engg.) based on recent development in Industrial Automation. The programme M.E.(Manufacturing Engg. with specialisation in Green Manufacturing) was discontinued from 2022.

Presently, the department offers 3 UG programmes: B.E.(Production Engg.), B.E.(Mechanical Engg.)[last admitted batch 2021] and B.E (Robotics and Automation) and  as well as 2 PG programmes: M.E. (Manufacturing Engg.) and M.E.(Mechatronics), besides PhD programme.

For UG programmes the admission is through the Centre for Admissions (CFA) following Common Engineering Admission Procedure(CEAP)  based Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering(GATE)  and Common Engineering Entrance Test and Admission (CEETA)-Post Graduate organized by Anna University. The number of enrolled PhD scholars is 41 and PhD awardees are 31 during 2015-2020.

The Department of Production Technology have been sponsored by AICTE 2010(Ultrasonic Cavitation Casting), DST-FIST 2012(Abrasive Water Jet Machine and Electrochemical Machine), UGC-DRS-SAP 2012 (Robotics), NRB-DRDODST-SERB(2017) and Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiatives (TANII) 2020. The department was a part of UGC-University with Potential for Excellence(UPE) 2017 in Biomedical Engg. and Instrumentation in “Limited Manufacturing Mechanical” group and has established state-of-art facilities in Manufacturing (CNC machining centre, CNC sheet bending, CNC compression moulding, CNC injection moulding, Robot Welding, Ultrasonic Welding, Electrical discharge Machine etc) and Testing (Coordinate Measuring Machine and Non contact surface roughness tester) for fabrication of Anti-biogram diagnostic device. The department was sanctioned by TANII 2020 for development of semi and fully automated intelligent exo-skeletal and prosthetics for disabled communities.

The students are promoted to take part in co-curricular activities through professional bodies namely The Association of Production Engineers (TAPE), Students Chapter Indian Institute of Production Engineers (IIPE) and The Association of Mechanical Engineers (TAME). The students are also involved in extracurricular activities NSSNSOYRC, The Box Office, Cultural event-AthenaumTamil mandram etc.  and co-curricular activities though MIT Tech Forum, Computer Society, MIT Met, Robotics Club etc.  The outdoor and indoor Sports Facility, Personality Development Association (PDA),  Yoga club etc groom the students with ethics, social, physical and emotional well being. The department students have been actively participating in E-BAJA national level competitions. The students of the department progress to higher graduation, employment and entrepreneurs. Alumni interact with the department in supporting students with financial support, internship and placement, besides inputs in the syllabus subcommittee for framing curriculum.

The progressions of students are monitored as well as provided appropriate guidance by mentors, faculty advisors and class committee. The department sensitizes students with latest developments globally, by upgrading the curriculum, internship in industry, project work at industry and R&D institutes as per guidelines of Centre for Academic Courses (CAC). Anna University supports students with various government and non-governmental scholarship (e.g. MIT Alumni Association) for meritorious and socio-economic weaker students. Through the Centre for Sponsored Research and Consultancy (CSRC) under Research Support Scheme, the students are supported for innovative projects with funding. The exemplary outcomes are supported by the Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR) for filing patents. Through the Centre for International Affairs (CIA), students are encouraged for semester exchange study at foreign universities with Memorandum of Understanding. The CIA also supports participation in conferences by students. Various avenues like Siemens Centre for Excellence, AU-FRG for CAD/CAM, Makers Innovation lab etc facilitate skill enhancing for better job prosperity.

The department conducts various events (conferences, workshops and Faculty development programmes) for disseminating the knowledge and resources. The facility in the department is extended to industry and academic institutes at nominal charges through CSRAC. The international conference RIPE sequel was conducted in March 2017. The Department jointly with the Department of Mechanical Engg in conducting AIMTDR 2018 lead by the Department of Manufacturing Engg. The faculty members regularly update their knowledge through participation in AICTE/UGC/MHRD faculty development programmes and participation in international workshops and conferences.
