Dr. A. SIDDHARTHAN
Professor & Head
The Department of Production Technology was started in the year 1977. Presently department conducts 2 UG programmes: B.E.(Production Engg.) and B.E.(Mechanical Engg.) as well as 2 PG programmes: M.E. (Manufacturing Engg.) and M.E.(Mechatronics), besides PhD programme. The department is unique with its initiative of M.E.(Mechatronics) (Full time) in the year 1999 and M.E. (Manufacturing Engg. with specialisation in Green Manufacturing) (Part-Time) in the year 2013, which were first of its kind in India. The department also conducts part time programmes in M.E.(Manufacturing Engg.) since 1993, M.E.(Manufacturing Engg. with specialisation in Green Manufacturing) since 2013 and B.E. (Mechanical) since 2015 to cater the need of industries and academic institutes, in and around Chennai. For UG programmes the admission is through Tamil Nadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) and for PG programmes it is through Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
The Department of Production Technology have been sponsored by AICTE 2010(Ultrasonic Cavitation Casting), DST-FIST 2012(Abrasive Water Jet Machine and Electrochemical Machine), UGC-DRS-SAP 2012 (Robotics), NRB-DRDO, DST-SERB(2017) and Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiatives (TANII) 2020. The department was a part of UGC-University with Potential for Excellence(UPE) 2017 in Biomedical Engg. and Instrumentation in “Limited Manufacturing Mechanical” group and has established state-of-art facilities in Manufacturing (CNC machining centre, CNC sheet bending, CNC compression moulding, CNC injection moulding, Robot Welding, Ultrasonic Welding, Electrical discharge Machine etc) and Testing (Coordinate Measuring Machine and Non contact surface roughness tester) for fabrication of Anti-biogram diagnostic device. Recently, the department is sanctioned by TANII 2020 for development of semi and fully automated intelligent exo-skeletal and prosthetics for disabled communities. The department is progressing towards societal benefit projects involving indigenous manufacturing, mechatronics and automation as well as interdepartmental research. The faculty members are actively involved in research in the domain of metal forming, metal joining, metal casting, composite material processing, non-conventional machining, mechatronics, robotics, automation and sustainable manufacturing. As on date, number of enrolled PhD scholars is 41 and PhD awardees are 31 during 2015-2020. The faculty members regularly update their knowledge through participation in AICTE/UGC/MHRD faculty development programmes and participation in international workshops and conferences.
The students are promoted to take part in co-curricular activities through professional bodies namely The Association of Production Engineers (TAPE) and The Association of Mechanical Engineers (TAME). The students also involve in extracurricular activities NSS, NSO, YRC, The Box Office, Cultural event-Athenaum, Tamil mandram etc. The outdoor and indoor Sports Facility, Personality Development Association (PDA), Yoga club etc groom the students with ethics, social, physical and emotional well being. The department students have been actively participated in E-BAJA national level competition. The students of the department, progress to higher graduation, employment and entrepreneurs. Alumni interact with department in supporting students with financial support, internship and placement, besides suggestions in syllabus subcommittee for framing curriculum.
The progressions of students are monitored by mentors, faculty advisors and class committee as well as provided appropriate guidance. The department sensitize students with latest development globally, by upgrading the curriculum, internship in industry, project work at industry and R&D institutes as per guidelines of Centre for Academic Courses (CAC). Anna University supports students with various government and non-governmental scholarship (e.g. MIT Alumni Association) for meritorious and socio-economic weaker students. Through Centre for Technology Development and Transfer (CTDT) under Research Support Scheme, the students are supported for innovative projects with funding. The exemplary outcomes are supported by Centre for Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR) for filing patent. Through Centre for International Affairs (CIA), students are encouraged for semester exchange study at foreign universities with Memorandum of Understanding. CIA also supports participation in conferences by students. Various avenues like Siemens Centre for Excellence, AU-FRG for CAD/CAM, Computer Society, MIT Tech Forum, Makers Innovation lab etc facilitate skill enhancing for better job prosperity.
The department conducts various events (conferences, workshop and Faculty development programmes) for disseminating the knowledge and resources. The facility in the department is extended to industry and academic institutes at nominal charges through CTDT. The international conference RIPE sequel was conducted in March 2017. The Department jointly with Department of Mechanical Engg in conduct of AIMTDR 2018 lead by Department of Manufacturing Engg.
The department facilitates avenues for perfect training the student to excel in the field of modern manufacturing systems and endeavours towards transformation technology to societal needs and preparedness for emerging local and global challenges and opportunities.
